We will survive the TAKS test

The TAKS Song(to the tune of "I Will Survive")At first I was afraid, I was petrified.Kept thinkin' I could never pass it even if I tried. But then I spent so many nightsThinkin' hard and thinkin' long,And I grew strong,And I learned how to carry on.Now TAKS is back, from outer space.I just walked in to find that test staring at meright in the face.I know that I can really rock.I know that I have got the key.And now I know it's all becauseMy teachers taught the strategies.Go on now, go, walk to that door.Just walk on through now,'Cause you're not frightened anymore.Weren't you the test that tried to throw me off the trail?Did I crumble?Did you think I'd lay down and fail?Oh no not I. I will survive.Oh, as long as I know the strategies,I know I'll stay alive.I've got all my life to live, I've got all my time to give and I'll survive.I will survive. Hey, Hey!

School year 2008-2009

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Wow, the summer has just flown by and the first day of school has finally arrived. I am very excited that I have the opportunity to work with your child. Third grade is a very exciting year, where the students really learn how to work with one another as well as independently. For this reason we will have a sports theme, one team, one goal. It will be an eventful journey as you watch your third grader grow over the course of the year.

I am currently on maternity leave and Mrs. Decker will be substituting in my place until the first part of October. I am looking forward to working with your children once I return.

In between balancing time as mother of two, a 22 month old and almost 2 month old, I will continue to find ways to update our classroom blog and make it more inviting. You can view this site at http://wilcoxmemos.blogspot.com/. It will serve as a resource for parents and students. Copies of newsletters and other important information will be available on this site. Remember the site is updated regularly, so continue to check back! If you have any questions, or need to contact me, please feel free to e-mail me at
kwilcox@newbraunfels.txed.net or via phone at 627-6562. My scheduled conference time is at 9:50-10:35 am this is the best time to be reached.

Agendas: In third grade students are given an organizer called an agenda. This will help your child with organization and responsibility. It also serves as a method of communication between the teacher and parents. Students are expected to have it each morning. I let students know from day one that it’s their responsibility to keep up with it, not their parents. If students don’t have their agendas they are to sit out for the first part of recess.
Homework: Students are expected to read 20 minutes nightly from a book of their choice. The book title and number of pages (for example, Shiloh 10-17) is to be written in their agendas. A short math assignment will be sent home Tuesdays and Thursdays along with Language Arts on Mondays and Wednesdays. If there is any question as to what is assigned for homework please refer to your child’s agenda. Parents are expected to sign the agendas daily to keep up with any notes from the teacher and class assignments.
Dress code: Students are required to wear tennis shoes to P.E. Flip flops are not permitted at school.
Lunch: 12:00-12:30 Lunch money can be sent daily or you can put money in your child’s account weekly or monthly. Something new this year is you are able to check online your child’s balance and credit the account online also. If your child has three unpaid lunches they will be given an alternate lunch. Please do not send sodas with your child’s lunch, they are not allowed.

Again, I am thrilled to have your child in my class this year. Although I will only have your child in class for a short period of their life, I want to make a contribution that will last a lifetime. All children are unique individuals with their own learning styles and talents. I hope to use this to help them succeed in third grade.
I am interested in how you see your child as both a learner and as a person, so please assist me by completing the attached worksheet. I look forward to working with your child and hope that together we can make this an outstanding year!
